Yesterday I went for lunch at my favorite cafe in the city, meeting an old friend who had just a few hours in Copenhagen. I took her to my favorite bookstore, and found my favorite Midori notebook, fingering its familiar, buttery paper. I took it home in glimmery anticipation of soon writing in fresh pages. The sun was beckoning me, wind playing with my hair as I whizzed home on my bike. The city was quintessential, a perfect late summer’s day in Denmark.
Listening, I packed a tote with a blanket, sunscreen, and my current book, and set off for the beach. I let stories of sea creatures whisk me into a world where the interconnectedness of all life was glaring and sacred. I giggled at the sensation of sand on my feet, gasped with pure delight as I dove into cool water. And as I walked home, utterly satisfied with life, I thought of the measure in which I deem a day worthy.
Pre-awakening, I used to measure the worth of a day based on how much I accomplished off my to-do list. As I’ve learned to listen to my body and my inner voice, I can now more clearly see what brings me true fulfillment. Did the sun kiss my skin today? Did I move my body? Was I breathing deeply? Was I fully present with friends & family? Did I feed the truth, the aliveness, that unmistakeable thirst for life within me?
These questions are much more telling of a day well spent. Yesterday, I set aside the unrelenting should’s and must’s, and followed the glimmers that led me to joy and contentment. I am reminded, again and again, that life is here and now. Life doesn’t start again when something is attained, accomplished, or secured. This, right here, is the point. This is where the magic is.
