Greetings from a quaint coffee shop in Long Beach, California. I’m sitting across from a person and their tan, smiley chihuahua, writing to you from the clouds. Floating, somewhere else, enveloped in the midst & magic of my book tour.

After five beautiful book events in Denver, I flew to LA and was welcomed by my dad & his siblings. We had a reunion feast at Duck House in Monterey Park, California, which is where a few of them live. I hadn’t seen those aunties & uncles since I was a little girl—if I had to guess, likely over two decades ago. They were all so proud of me. My Uncle Jack said a prayer before our meal and blessed our family, blessed my book, which he described as “beautiful and truthful.”

Monterey Park is also where the Star Ballroom Dance Studio shooting happened two Lunar New Years’ ago. Reading my poem about that specific incident, with my uncles present, at my LA book launch at Book Soup (apparently, an iconic bookstore on Sunset Boulevard) for my debut poetry collection…something very, very powerful was and is happening. Something ancestral is happening. I’m experiencing the most poignant and powerful communal healing, with my own art & wisdom as the vessel.

me & my dad at my book soup event 🥲

I don’t know how to articulate the specifics of this magic, and that’s okay. This particular magic is bigger than me & my comprehension. What I know for sure is that I’m living out a manifestation, which feels surreal; both known & unknown. I have no idea what’s going to happen next, or how this chapter of my life will unfold…but I know that it is destined, written into my bones.

Each event has been moving & powerful in its own way—because of the people in the room, the conversation that’s had, and the energy we co-create together. The people that have been coming to my events are truly the best of humanity. Caring, earnest, conscious, radical, and powerful people who are actively doing good things. Actively questioning the system, practicing communal care, and building our new paradigm world. I genuinely have hope that we will be okay because of them. Because of us.

I am getting to experience the reality of the beautiful, safe, liberated world we are creating together at my book events. This blip of time, the magic we create in that moment…it really is a portal. A physical, somatic & felt experience that shows us that the new world we dream of is not just close—it is here.

with my conversation partner, yumi sakugawa, and our beautiful community!

new moon offering: a meditation on boundaries

Lastly, I’ll leave you with a meditation & reflection questions on boundaries, which has felt especially pertinent for me on tour. My schedule in California is back-to-back, meaning I’ve had to say “no” to most social hangouts, and take really, really good care of myself in between events.
